Walmart Files Patents for VR Shopping System

Shoppers would see images of product-filled shelves and select purchases virtually.

BENTONVILLE, Arkansas – Walmart has filed two patents that could make virtual reality (VR) shopping an actual reality, Forbes reports.

The patents describe a VR headset and sensor-laden gloves that would give shoppers a 3D virtual simulation environment. Users would see images of products sitting on shelves and virtually select the items they want.

Self-driving robots at one of several remote fulfillment facilities would monitor each consumer’s movements and physically locate their chosen items in the warehouse. The robots would pick the items using an articulated arm and place them into a container for shipping. “Smart shelves” at the fulfillment centers would monitor inventory in real time.

It’s possible that the shopper could be in a room with sensory feedback devices that could control the temperature and output smells corresponding to the virtual objects. The VR shopping system would be integrated with other Walmart systems.

The VR showroom could be located at a retail store—in a room or kiosk—allowing customers to compare products using the VR system. An example described in the patent filing is a customer virtually setting a dinner table using various styles of china, glassware and centerpieces.

VR is not new to Walmart. The company has used virtual reality for employee training, and earlier this year, Walmart acquired Spatialand, a startup that makes software tools that transform existing content into VR experiences.
