SEATTLE – Starbucks is extending its three-year-old cold brew line with a plant-based protein beverage that’s available in two flavors, according to USA Today.

The Protein Blended Cold Brew comes in either almond or cacao flavor. The added protein is made from peas and brown rice.

“Plant-based beverages, plant-based proteins are a choice that many consumers are gravitating toward,” Kevin Johnson, Starbucks CEO, told investors at a recent meeting.

The 270-calorie almond-flavored drink is made of almond milk, almond butters and 12 grams of plant-based protein. The sweetness comes from Starbucks’ “Banana Date Fruit Blend” and coconut sugar. The 250-calorie cacao version combines coconut milk, cacao powder and 10 grams of plant-based protein.

This marks the chain’s first foray into plant-protein coffees. The drinks are available at participating Starbucks locations in the United States and Canada.
