Yelp Offers ‘Open to All’ Label

Businesses on Yelp can display label that tells customers they don’t discriminate.

WASHINGTON – Businesses on Yelp can now label themselves “Open to All”—showing they do not discriminate against customers or employees on the basis of gender, race or sexual orientation, the Washington Post reports.

Yelp is the latest to join the Open to All campaign, which urges business owners nationwide to publicly show their commitment to serving customers from all backgrounds. There are already 1,200 businesses and cities aligned with the coalition since its inception in 2017, including AirBnB, Levi Stauss and Lyft.

An Eater article explained that “in return for their online word, those businesses will receive a special Yelp designation alongside their hours and location listing, plus a physical sticker to display at their business—a circular badge along the lines of the ubiquitous “People Love Us on Yelp” signs.

“In 2018, it’s shocking that many people of color, LGBTQ people, people of minority faith and others still can’t be sure they won’t be discriminated against when they seek goods or services from businesses in their local communities,” said Calla Rongerude, Open to All spokeswoman, in the Washington Post story. “No one should have to worry about whether they will be denied service.”

According to a Yelp blog post, the Open to All campaign “launched in response to the recent ruling on the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission case … and aims to step in where legislation falls short and help protect consumers from discrimination.”
