MCLEAN, Virginia – Beer remains the alcoholic beverage of choice among Americans, according to a recent Gallup Poll. In fact, 42% of Americans who consume alcohol prefer beer, while 34% choose wine and 19% select liquor, USA Today reports.

Beer has been at the top of the beverage list for the past 26 years, which is how long Gallup has tracked the nation’s alcohol preferences, although wine tied evenly with beer during three of these annual polls.

The desire for beer is up slightly over the 2017 poll (40%). In that same period, preference for rosé wine jumped four points to 34%, and the enthusiasm for liquor fell from 26% to 19%. The results come as medical researchers report increasingly conflicted findings regarding the possible benefit or harm from consuming alcohol.

As beer’s popularity grows, so does the number of American breweries.  Ten years ago, America could boast of 1,574 breweries, but today that number is 6,655, up 1,100 over last year, according to the Brewers Association.
