WASHINGTON, D.C. – JAB Ltd., which owns Panera Bread and Krispy Kreme, announced plans to acquire Pret A Manger, an English sandwich shop chain that has been making inroads into America, the Wall Street Journal reports. JAB also owns Keurig Green Mountain and Peet’s Coffee & Tea.

JAB has enlarged its coffee empire by entering into distribution agreements with Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. These moves prompted rival Nestlé SA to purchase Chameleon Cold Brew ready-to-drink coffee and a majority of Blue Bottle Coffee Inc., as well as strike its own distribution deal with Starbucks to put Starbucks tea and coffee in retail locations.

Pret offers healthier fare, including coconut porridge, salads and protein pots, plus a few vegetarian-only stores. With onsite kitchens, Pret keeps up with current food trends. JAB plans to increase Pret’s U.S. expansion plans and improve the chain’s limited coffee menu.

The sandwich shop manages costs by giving suppliers a steady stream of business, and soliciting bids for purchases such as packagine via online auctions. Prior to the JAB acquisition, Pret had 10 consecutive years of earnings and sales growth.
