NEWARK, N.J.—Mars has introduced a new M&M’S character for the first time in 10 years. Purple is the latest addition, and she is “designed to represent acceptance and inclusivity” and is “known for her earnest self-expression,” according to Mars.
"Mars is thrilled to debut the newest member of the M&M'S cast of characters to the world. There is so much about our new spokescandy that people can relate to and appreciate, including her willingness to embrace her true self. Our new character reminds us to celebrate what makes us unique," said Jane Hwang, global vice president at Mars Wrigley. "Our purpose story is just getting started and the introduction of our newest M&M'S spokescandy is the next chapter, as the brand continues to delight fans with fun in a way only M&M'S can."
Purple has a keen sense of self-awareness, authenticity and confidence and is quirky and charming, according to Mars.
The new addition even comes with her own music single and video. The musical debut entitled, “I'm Just Gonna Be Me” features saxophonist Grace Kelly, dancers and choreographers Devin Santiago and Colo Cag, opera singer Anthony Roth Costanzo and appearances by the rest of the M&M'S crew. For every stream of the song, a $1 donation (up to $500,000) will be made to Sing for Hope, a nonprofit that helps musical artists give back to their community.
But M&M’S fans shouldn’t expect Purple in their bags of candy. However, the character will be in stores, on the M&M’S website and on some limited addition packaging, according to CNN. Customers can also buy Purple M&M’S online.
In January, Mars updated its M&M’S characters to better reflect the diverse and nuanced world of its fans. The characters received updated personalities to “underscore the importance of self-expression and power of community through storytelling,” according to Mars.
