WALTHAM, Mass.—The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that everyone stay six feet apart from other people whenever possible. In smaller footprint stores though, that can be tricky. Here’s what some retailers are doing to help their customers keep their distance.
In late March, Wawa started asking customers and associates to maintain a distance of six feet from each other inside the store, which was supported through helpful in-store signage, announcements and videos. By April 3, Wawa also had added visual floor markers to support maintaining a healthy distance and new distancing aids in the form of clear, plastic shields at checkout counters.
In New Jersey, where by law, attendants must pump gas, Wawa also implemented a “just crack your window” effort. New signs at New Jersey pumps instruct customers to lower passenger-side windows three inches to talk to fuel attendants.
Global Partners LP’s convenience store brands, Alltown Fresh, Alltown, Jiffy Mart, XtraMart, T-Bird and Honey Farms, recently placed pre-printed floor decals for customer spacing and is installing plexiglass guards at all store registers. The stores are also implementing contactless cash handling and added disposable gloves at the pump for customers.
7-Eleven Inc. has also installed plexiglass sneeze guards at front sales counters at all 9,000 U.S. locations. “We are doing everything we can to keep stores open and stocked with the products local communities need, while also keeping customers safe. These new sneeze guards provide additional protection for customers, store associates and franchisees,” said 7‑Eleven President and CEO Joseph DePinto, in a press release.
In Kenosha, Wash., Lou Perrine’s Gas and Grocery has signage asking customers to maintain a six-foot apart distance while waiting in line and to stay behind the plexiglass when checking out. The store also requests customers get in and out quickly and leave children in their vehicles whenever possible.
