Consumers Are Souring on Added Sugar

Additional sugar on ingredient lists can have a negative impact on purchasing decisions, shoppers say.

WESTCHESTER, Ill. – Consumers say that listing added sugars on the upcoming new Nutrition Facts Label would impact their purchase decisions, according to a survey by Ingredion Inc., an ingredient provider based in Westchester, Illinois, and reported by Food Business News.

When asked how the listing of added sugars would influence buying decisions for specific foods, surveyed consumers said it would have a negative effect on their purchase of snack bars (52%), cookies (53%), fruit drinks (71%) and spoonable yogurt (72%).

“If you look at how many grams of sugar is generally acceptable by consumers per serving, you see anywhere from 5 to 10 to 15 grams, except for fruit drinks, where consumers essentially told us they are happy to see no added sugar in a fruit drink,” said Afrouz Naeini, senior marketing manager for Ingredion.

Changes to the current Nutrition Facts Label include the listing of added sugars in the upcoming label set by the Food and Drug Administration. Compliance dates for the new label are January 1, 2020, for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales and January 1, 2021, for smaller manufacturers.
