The U.S. convenience store industry has 154,958​ stores that account for about $550 billion in total sales. Here are more details:

  • ​U.S. Convenience Store Count: There are a record 154,958 U.S. covneience stores as of December 31, 2017, a 0.3% increase (423 stores) from the year prior, according to the latest NACS/Nielsen Convenience Industry Store Count.
  • Convenience Stores Offer More Convenience: Convenience stores offer speed of service to time-starved consumers who want to get in and out of the store quickly. These shoppers recognize this channel of trade for its convenient locations, extended hours of operation, one-stop shopping, grab-and-go foodservice, a variety of merchandise and fast transactions.

Inside the Store
U.S. convenience stores experienced record in-store sales of $233.0 billion in 2016, led by consumer desires to satisfy an immediate need for food and refreshment. ​

Fuel Sales
There are 122,552 convenience stores selling fuel in the United States, and these retailers sell an estimated 80% of all the fuel purchased in the country.
