Labor and Health Care

The convenience store industry employs 2.31 million Americans, and labor and health-care costs are the largest expense category for the industry. NACS continues to work with congressional leaders on labor and health-care issues so retailers can control their costs and not have to make the choice between offering benefits and hiring new employees.

Health-Care Reform
NACS is working with various coalitions to change the definition of full-time employee to one who works 40 hours/week (instead of 30). NACS is also working to make the reporting requirements on businesses less burdensome.

Overtime Regulations
Many convenience stores rely on overtime exemptions for managers and certain assistant managers, allowing them to avoid paying overtime rates to those employees. A dramatic increase in the salary threshold may make this difficult if not impossible to maintain and possibly result in much higher labor costs for c-store operators.
