ATLANTA – As the convenience and fuels retailing industry has improved its reputation by selling more healthy items, it has developed a strong working relationship with the Partnership for a Healthy America (PHA). Thursday, PHA CEO Larry Solder talked about that relationship during the NACS Show General Session.

“Ten years ago, when I walked into a convenience store, I knew that my options would be limited. Now, I know that in so many more stores I can leave with water, nuts, hummus and a banana. I feel good for me and for my family,” Soler said.

Soler announced Thursday that three new industry players have become PHA partners and are increasing their healthy options efforts. The convenience store industry’s efforts were also recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama, honorary chair of the PHA, in a letter read aloud during the General Session.

Aloha Petroleum’s Aloha Island Mart stores, based in Hawaii, will offer a greater variety of healthier food options. Those will include more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthier grab-and-go items, combo meals and more non-fat or low-fat dairy products.

Ricker’s convenience stores in Indiana have committed to pumping up healthier food offerings. The company will provide employees a 50% discount on all fruits and vegetables and make sure that every child that enters one of Ricker’s more than 50 c-stores is offered a free piece of fruit.

Core-Mark International, a retail supplier and distributor of fresh foods, will incorporate healthier options into existing merchandising sets and offer discounts on healthier food and beverage products. Employees will benefit from discounted gym memberships and the company will join PHA’s Drink Up and FNV campaigns, promoting greater consumption of fruits and vegetables, and water as a beverage of choice.
