EMV Extension: What You Need to Know

The latest NACS Convenience Matters podcast looks at how the announcement to move implementation to 2020 for outside EMV will affect convenience retailers.

December 22, 2016

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The recent announcement about the implementation extension of EMV from 2017 to 2020 is good news for the fuel retailing community. But what exactly does this implementation date change mean for small- and medium-sized retailers that comprise 80% of the convenience and petroleum retail market—and how does this affect your fill-up?

The specifics behind the announcement—and how it affects your business—is the subject of the latest NACS Convenience Matters podcast.

In the new Convenience Matters podcast, “EMV Implementation Extension—But Don’t Put Off Upgrades,” cohosts Jeff Lenard, NACS vice president of strategic industry initiatives, and John Eichberger, executive director of the Fuels Institute, talk to Kara Gunderson, POS manager for CITGO Petroleum Company, about how the new implementation date for outside EMV affects retailers—and their customers.

“The EMV implementation extension reflects that adding EMV to the forecourt is incredibly complex. Not only do terminals have to work in all extreme weather conditions, it’s not unusual for convenience retailers with a heavy fueling presence to have more payment terminals than a grocery store,” Lenard said.

The episode can be downloaded on iTunes or Google Play by searching for “Convenience Matters.” It is also available at nacsonline.com/podcasts. There are also nine “field reports” posted from the expo floor.

A new Convenience Matters podcast will be released every week, focusing on topics related to convenience stores. Since its launch in February 2016, it has been downloaded in more than 50 countries.
