ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Once again, payment card skimmers found in dispenser payment terminals at gasoline pumps have hit the news. NACS recently launched a new webpage to educate and help retailers better protect their businesses from skimmers.

Yesterday, Conexxus and NACS hosted a free webinar that highlighted the processes and tools available to protect dispenser terminals from intrusion and skimmers. The webinar was conducted by representatives from Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Wayne Fueling Systems and the NACS/Conexxus We Care program. View the webinar slides here.

The webinar highlighted low-cost practices to help retailers foil thieves, including training sales associates to watch for high levels of dispenser “offline” messages and to be suspicious of “technicians” performing unscheduled work. Store personnel should also inspect dispensers on a daily basis, look for anything abnormal about the payment terminal, maintain a line of sight with the fuel island and inspect all islands if incidents happen at other local stores.

The webinar also covered how retailers can work with their service providers to establish a routine, detailed inspection of all payment terminals; to enable store personnel to request site inspections; and to establish an equipment “baseline” with the provider. For additional security, convenience stores should change locks to “site-unique” keysets, install dispenser access alarms and a prominent video surveillance system, and improve forecourt lighting.

Since 2011, the Conexxus (then PCATS) Data Security Committee has worked with major dispenser manufacturers to create a portfolio of resources that provides guidance for retailers seeking to reduce the risk of skimmers being installed on their fuel islands.
