MINNEAPOLIS – Target jumps into the mobile payments game with the launching of “Wallet,” found within its store app, Tech Crunch reports. With Wallet, shoppers can pay and redeem Cartwheel digital coupons with their smartphones. The Cartwheel part of the app has been in service for a while.

Now, customers can link their Target REDcard to their app for mobile payment at checkout. Target claims using Wallet is up to four times quicker than “other payment types.” Future amenities in Wallet include linking Target gift cards to the app. The Wallet feature can be accessed on Android and iOS Target apps.

“Wallet in the Target app makes checkout easier and faster than ever,” said Mike McNamara, Target’s chief information and digital officer. “Guests are going to love the convenience of having payment, Cartwheel offers, Weekly Ad coupons and GiftCards all in one place with Wallet.”

Target is a little late to mobile payments, as other retailers, including Walmart and CVS, have had their own functionality for a while. In-house mobile payment systems provide retailers with more information about shoppers, as well as helping stores save transaction fees.
