YORK, Pa. – Thanks to recent changes to Pennsylvania’s liquor laws, Rutter’s launched beer sales in its first three locations: Mercersburg, Newberrytown, and Hamburg, Pennsylvania, which makes the convenience store chain the first to begin selling beer in Franklin, York and Berks County.

Rutter’s beer caves are set at 29 degrees, and the stores are selling a cold selection of craft, domestic and imported beers and ciders in singles, 6- and 12-packs. The restaurant area with the beer cave has seating for at least 30 customers.

Rutter’s customers will be able to purchase beer Monday thru Saturday from 7:00 am until 2:00 am and on Sundays from 9:00 am until 2:00 am, as in accordance with Pennsylvania law. Rutter’s will also be bringing beer to the first Lancaster County location to sell beer with their Leola store in a few weeks.

“Rutter’s is committed to responsible retailing, and delivering quality convenience to communities we serve. We are excited that we will be able to offer the convenience of beer purchases to complement our extensive restaurant food in our stores,” said Derek Gaskins, chief customer officer.

Recent changes in Pennsylvania could provide convenience stores in the state with increased opportunities relating to beer and wine sales. The state has also created a “wine expanded permit” for restaurant licensees—which includes eligible grocery and convenience stores—allowing for the sale of up to three liters of wine to go in a single transaction.
