The state joins 17 others with tickets costing $30 or more.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Maryland Lottery has had a record year in lottery sales, and this week, the Lottery and Gaming Control Commission okayed a new, $30 scratch-off ticket, the Baltimore Sun reports. The “2,000,000 Fortune” ticket will be the state’s most expensive ticket.

The ticket will have a $2 million top prize as an instant ticket or scratch-off. The new addition to the state’s lottery lineup will debut in the first quarter of 2017. “We want to get on that bandwagon,” said Gordon Medenica, the lottery’s director. He supported the change, given how many other states had expensive instant tickets.

Maryland’s current highest-priced scratch-off ticket is $20, and the least expensive is $1. Lottery officials point to an industry trend in higher-priced instant tickets, particularly the $20 ones. Part of the appeal is that the higher-priced tickets generally have bigger payoffs.

“It is a trend in the industry and one in which we’ve seen positive results in other states,” he said. Currently, 17 states offer lottery tickets priced at $30 or more, with Texas having one that costs $50.

In Maryland, net sales of $20 tickets jumped from $62 million in FY 2013 to $75 million in FY 2015, while $1 ticket sales remained flat. The Maryland Lottery generated record sales during FY 2016, which was attributed to a $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot and more interest in instant tickets.
