ALEXANDRIA, Va. – America Recycles Day on November 15 is a nationally recognized, community-driven awareness campaign by Keep America Beautiful dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. It has been held since 1997. The theme for this year’s annual event is #BeRecycled, #BuyRecycled.

“America Recycles Day provides a key moment in time to regain momentum for recycling in America, and to help make recycling a daily social norm across the country,” said Brenda Pulley, senior vice president of recycling for Keep America Beautiful. “Get involved by conducting an America Recycles Day event in your hometown. Let’s get people recycling every day—at home, at work and on the go!”

Keep America Beautiful offers a number of Free resources include tips for designing public places, how to create your own recycling events (electronics recycling, recycling at work) and promotional materials and signs you can print.

Last month, Keep America Beautiful and NACS announced they partnered to produce the new resource, “Being a Good Neighbor: A Guide to Reducing Litter, Managing Trash and Encouraging Recycling” for convenience stores. The free guide includes checklists to help retailers manage litter, retailer case study examples and practical tips for trash management and recycling at stores.

Additionally, NACS stresses environmental stewardship and being a good neighbor in the NACS Community Toolkit providing links to resources and organizations that can help.

Retailers should celebrate being America’s trash receptacle, especially at the fuel island, by highlighting or increasing recycling capabilities. NACS consumer survey results found that nearly half of all naysayers of convenience stores in their community cite litter as being the cause of their consternation. Survey results also found that 53% of consumers prefer to buy from companies that encourage recycling and that number increases to 62% for millennials.
