SEATTLE – PicoBrew Inc. launched the company’s latest product, the PicoBrew Pico, allowing aspiring home beer makers to brew five liters of their own craft beer.

At 12 inches wide and 31 pounds, the Pico is about the size of a large microwave and allows someone with no brewing experience to create their own craft concoction.

“Although the craft beer market is expanding at a record pace, small craft breweries face a steep and increasing challenge getting distribution for their beers. At the same time, craft beer lovers around the world are eager to discover and experience unique fresh craft brews,” said Dr. Bill Mitchell, CEO of PicoBrew. “We’re excited to help both craft breweries squeezed by this increasing beer market consolidation, and craft beer lovers who can’t get the beer selection and quality they crave.”

Bloomberg writes the Pico is no more complicated than dropping a coffee pod into a Keurig. But instead of getting a freshly brewed single-serving of coffee, users get a big batch of craft beer. There are also more than 50 breweries making PicoPak pods (prepackaged pods of grains, hops and yeast) for the machine, including Rogue Ales and Elysian Brewing, and packs start from $19 per five-liter batch. Some PicoPaks also employ a dry-hopping step where a hops package is added for more hop flavor and aroma.

The Seattle Times writes that breweries will make a commission every time someone buys one of their PicoPaks online.
