HARTFORD – A Connecticut state senator is seeking to relegate e-cigarettes to the same public restrictions placed on traditional cigarettes, CBS New York reports.

State Senator Ed Meyer said that while the health dangers from e-cigarettes have not yet been officially determined, he would like to restrict their use in public places, just like traditional cigarettes, CBS New York reports.

“The FDA did in 2009 issue a preliminary warning about vapors from e-cigarettes, so that’s interesting,” Meyer said, adding that the FDA said there is nicotine in e-cigarettes “and that therefore there’s a presumption that the vapor that’s emitted — vapor rather than smoke — will be toxic.”

Meyer said he plans to draft his e-cigarette bill to be considered in the state’s upcoming legislative session.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health has not yet taken a position on e-cigarettes.
