SEOUL, South Korea – Beginning this month, CU convenience stores throughout South Korea have introduced a new Chinese language information system to meet the needs of Chinese tourists. The effort was put in place to prepare for the huge number of Chinese tourists expected to visit South Korea during the country’s National Day holiday period, one of the most important holidays in China.

Employees in stores where the system is installed can use a device on the cash register to play five recorded voice messages to Chinese customers, including basic greetings, asking about a rewards card, telling the amount of money owed, and the amount of change. The price of purchase and the change will also appear in Chinese on the screen that the customer sees.

The first stores where the Chinese language information system was installed were branches in Seoul, Myeongdong and Jeju Island that are frequented by many Chinese customers. The convenience store chain announced its plan to finish introducing the system at all 8,200 of its stores around the country by next week.
