TORONTO – McDonald’s plans to give Canadian customers more options for how to buy food, saying that consumers are looking for more personalized experiences in today’s market of on-demand services. By 2017, McDonald’s announced, it will add both self-service kiosks and table service to its approximately 1,400 restaurants throughout Canada.

Customers who enjoy serving themselves will be able to order at the kiosks, after exploring a wide range of menu options. Customers who prefer to be served by waiters or waitresses will be able to sit down at tables to order. McDonald’s restaurants will be divided into two sides—with a glass case of bakery items in the middle—for customers to choose which option best fits their needs on each visit.

McDonald’s plans to hire about 15,000 new employees to implement the changes.

“It used to be uniformity, reliability, consistency. Now everybody’s got their own way of connecting with the world,” McDonald’s Canada CEO John Betts said in a statement. He added: “We’re looking to match and exceed other restaurant experiences in terms of the personal interaction.”
