‘Shelfie’ App Aims to Crowdsource Inventory Upkeep

App could put an end to ‘out-of-stock’ items, rewarding customers for reporting empty shelves.

​CINCINNATI, Ohio –Everyone has experienced one of those annoying shopping trips, arriving at the store only to find the needed item is sold out. At which point, there is often nothing the store can do at that moment to get stock in. A new app is hoping to empower consumers when it comes to eliminated these frustrating “out of stock” shopping occurrences.

Now the app, Shelfie, is giving customers a new level of involvement in store inventory, rewarding them for tracking empty shelves and delivering that data to stores to help them avoid stock deficits.

Developed by Cincinnati-based marketing analysts Datacrowd, consumers who download the free app can take a 'shelfie' — a picture of the empty shelf and accompanying product tag — every time they come across one. They can then send the image along with their GPS location and in return, they're offered reward points that can be redeemed in store, or used to spend on other participating brands. Datacrowd then alerts supermarkets with data about when, where and which products are out of stock.
