Company fighting climate change with plan to phase out use of hydroflourocarbons in equipment.

September 24, 2014

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Just in time for last weekend’s Climate Change March, PepsiCo Inc. announced that it plans to phase out equipment with hydroflourocarbons (HFC), as part of its effort to fight climate change.

The company proposed its goal to have all future domestic point-of-sale equipment — such as coolers, vending machines and fountain dispensers — to be HFC-free by 2020. HFCs are a commonly used chemical coolant that is considered a potent greenhouse gas.

The company will start purchasing new HFC-free equipment starting next year, and has already started to phase out HFCs in its equipment outside of the United States. The company said this and other efforts, including improving the energy efficiency of its coolers and vending machines, has reduced its total greenhouse-gas emissions by 18%.
