Minnesota Smokers Crossing the Border for Cheaper Smokes

Following Minnesota’s $1.60-per-pack cigarette tax hike that took effect in July, border residents are flocking to North Dakota for much cheaper cigarettes.

FARGO – Minnesota smokers are crossing the border into North Dakota, following a dollar-sixty-per-pack statewide cigarette tax hike, Valley News Live reports. The state tax on a pack of cigarettes in North Dakota is 44 cents, compared to $2.83 in Minnesota.

As a result of the tax hike, businesses in North Dakota border towns, including Fargo, are seeing a big rise in tobacco sales.

The Petro Serve in Fargo said they recently quadrupled their regular orders on certain brands to keep up with demand.

"We go through like four times the amount of cigarettes we did before,” said Peter Ullman, Sales Associate at Petro Serve. "They're all Minnesotas, like all Minnesota IDs.”

The price disparity is enough that some Minnesota smokers are curtailing their habit to coincide with their driving schedule.

"If I run out while I'm over there in Minnesota, I'll just wait until I get back here and just try to cut off for a little while," said Marshall Paulsen, a smoker.
