LAKELAND, Fla. - Publix Super Markets is testing Publix Curbside, its Internet grocery ordering and at-store pickup service, Progressive Grocer reports. The chain is running the test at one Atlanta location currently, with a Tampa store to be added to the pilot program soon.

Customers place orders at www.publix.com/curbside, picking their store pickup location and a 30-minute pickup timeframe. The site figures out an estimated total, since produce, deli and meat need to be weighed for specific prices. The pickup day??s sales prices will be reflected on the order. Customer pay when picking up their order, plus a $7.99 service fee, with no minimum amount required. The site allows shoppers to keep multiple lists saved for future orders.

"As we continue to provide our customers with the service they have grown to expect, we need to provide new and more advanced ways to meet the needs of their growing and changing families," said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations. "Publix Curbside is a natural extension of our service commitment, especially for time-starved families."

Personal shoppers fulfill online orders, which also can be faxed or phoned in directly to the store. The Tampa store has dedicated parking spaces while the Atlanta store has a drive-through for the service.

Publix has dabbled in online shopping and home delivery before with its PublixDirect program, which ran from 2001 to 2003.
