HOUSTON – Inspired by food critic Alison Cook’s recent review of a delicious eatery “in the most unlikely of places: a gas station in East End,” the Houston Chronicle decided to seek out other gas stations and convenience stores serving up tasty eats around Houston and the Lone Star State. As part of its Readers Choice series, the publication surveyed its readers, asking them to weigh in on their favorites through Facebook and Twitter , compiling a list of the best gas station grub in  the area.

As Chronicle writer Andrea Waguespack said in the introduction to the top 15 spots, “Who needs white linen tablecloths when you have hidden gems like these?”

Included on the list are a variety of ethnic cuisines and down-home favorites:

  • Mediterranean (Ekkos Greek Deli)
  • Mexican (Sunrise Taquito Mexican Grill at a Shell Station, Gracia’s Breakfast Tacos at an Exxon and Chismosa’s Taco House at a Shell Station)
  • Southern (Chevron Family Kitchen)
  • Eastern European (Czech Stop)
  • bakeries (Hruska’s Bakery)
  • And perennial favorites like Stripes, Valero and Buc-ee’s.
