NEW YORK – The Wall Street Journal reports that Dollar General has picked up 41 Walmart Express locations across 11 states. Walmart announced in January the closure of its 102 small format stores, which had been in pilot since 2011.

“Dollar General is excited to add these locations to our existing store base,” said CEO Todd Vasos in a statement. “We look forward to the opportunity to better serve our customers in these communities by continuing to provide the convenience and value they expect from Dollar General.”

According to the company, the locations will feature an updated “DG16 layout” with expanded offers such as fresh meat and produce.

Dollar General also intends to operate the fueling stations in 37 previous Walmart Express Store locations.
