McDonald's Commits to Improved Nutrition Choices

Plan includes ongoing menu evolution, nutrition awareness communications.

OAK BROOK, IL - McDonald??s USA announced yesterday a formal plan to offer more healthful food options for its customers through the company??s "Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices" plan.

Among the changes it announced:

  1. Every Happy Meal will automatically include produce or a low-fat dairy option (rollout is to be complete in all U.S. restaurants by Q1 2012).
  2. A reduction in added sugars, saturated fats, and calories will be achieved through portion adjustment, reformulations, and innovations. McDonald??s said it would reduce sodium by an average of 15 percent across its national menu of food items by 2015.
  3. Easier accessibility to nutrition information: McDonald??s is expanding in-restaurant and website communications that address nutritional information, as well as launching a mobile app that details food items and their nutritional values.

"McDonald's will always try to do the right thing, and we know we can help make a difference in our communities," said Jan Fields, president of McDonald??s USA. "The commitments we're announcing today will guide the future evolution of our menu and marketing."

"I applaud the commitments made by McDonald's today," said Roger Clemens, University of Southern California adjunct professor of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences. "They have ?? taken a reasoned, evidence-based approach that should have a positive impact on the millions of children and adults McDonald's serves every day."
