A restaurant boat makes waves in the Allegheny River.

FREEPORT, Penn. - A floating restaurant offers water lovers a chance to enjoy some fun in the sun and still get that order of smoked chicken or pizza, the Tribune-Review reports.

Hellbender??s Smokehouse, named for a particularly ugly salamander, cruises the Allegheny River with its menu of pizza, sandwiches and local favorites, such as organic smoked chicken. Patrons stop by on cabin cruisers, ski boats, personal watercraft and other boats and hop aboard to put in an order. Waitresses in bikinis take menu requests on deck.

Dave Charlton, one of Hellbender??s owners, got the idea for the restaurant while balancing a carryout pizza on his jet ski last summer. "People were coming up to me saying, 'I??ll give you money for that pizza,??" he said.

Charlton and a friend, Keif Kyler, bought a 1969 Sylvan pontoon houseboat with a 75-horsepower outboard motor. Eventually, the pair would like to add Wave Runners to make food deliveries on the water, said Kyler.

The two cook up the food on a smoker convection oven and gas grill with salt slabs. "For size, we really liked the wood pellets for the smoker because it??s clean cooking," said Kyler.

When the water traffic is busy, the two said they have served around 200 folks. The Hellbender runs nearly every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
