Showcasing How C-Stores Contribute to Their Communities

An updated NACS toolkit helps retailers engage with community groups in a positive way.
July 20, 2016

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – NACS has updated its popular toolkit, “How Convenience Stores Work And Their Contributions to Communities.” The primer, first published in 2015, provides a starting point for retailers to define their businesses before community groups and addresses issues including jobs, property values, overnight hours, traffic and community engagement. Since then, it has been updated to include new sections on people and products, and also features the newest metrics from both the 2016 NACS Retail Fuels Report and the NACS State of the Industry Report of 2015 Data.

“During zoning hearings, opposition to convenience store permitting—whether for ground-up stores or remodels—often centers on general misperceptions about the value convenience stores deliver to the communities that they serve,” said NACS Vice President of Strategic Industry Initiatives Jeff Lenard. “This primer addresses these common concerns and helps retailers tell their stories about their commitment to their communities. I use it myself to share with national groups and businesses to give them a quick overview of our industry and our positive contributions to the communities we serve.”

“We are working on several new resources—based on member feedback—to provide them with tools to help grow their businesses. We welcome your ideas for future projects,” added Lenard, who can be reached at
