FDA Posts Draft Guidance on Tobacco Compliance; Offers Retailer Compliance Session

The first of several retailer compliance programs will take place on Monday, July 19.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has posted information on its website that guides retailers in implementing a program that complies with new federal laws regarding the sale, distribution, advertising and promotion of tobacco products.

The "Draft Guidance for Industry: Tobacco Retailer Training Programs" addresses such topics as requesting and verifying photo identification from purchasers and refusing to sell tobacco to minors. As the document is in draft form only, comments and suggestions are being accepted through September 14, 2010 and can be sent via the FDA Tobacco Products website.

The FDA also will be holding five live (and free) tobacco retailer compliance sessions, with the first taking place July 19 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm EDT in Boston at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. Those unable to attend in person can participate by phone:
