WASHINGTON, DC - Don't like the looks of the new nationwide menu labeling law and how it might play out? Think you've got the answers? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants to hear from you!

The FDA announced earlier this week that it is accepting public comments on the pending new law, which will require calorie content and nutritional data to be posted at certain chain restaurants, retail food operations and in vending machines, Food Safety News reports.

While food items sold in stores are required to post nutritional information, how that data is displayed in restaurants has, to date, been left to state and local governments to decide, the result of which is a dizzying assortment of rules and regulations.

The new law applies to restaurants that are part of a chain with 20 or more locations as well as vending machine operators with 20 or more units. When finalized, it will be applied consistently across all states.

The FDA must propose regulations on implementing the law by March 23, 2011, and it is accepting public comments for the next 58 days.

To comment, visit the FDA site; after selecting "submit a comment," supply the following docket number: FDA-2010-N-0298; then hit "search."
