ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A number of emerging companies are seeking to disrupt the retail fueling business by offering gas on demand: Click on an app, order your fuel and wait for your fill-up. These companies promise consumers “life without gas stations” and never having to stop for gas again. But what are the challenges that these business face in replacing the country’s 39 million fill-ups each day?

As Silicon Valley seeks to disrupt the retail fueling business, the latest NACS Convenience Matters podcast talks about their odds of success.

Program co-hosts Jeff Lenard, NACS vice president of strategic industry initiatives, and John Eichberger, executive director of the Fuels Institute, discuss these emerging concepts in the “Gas to Go” podcast, which can be downloaded on iTunes by searching for “Convenience Matters.” The podcast is also available at nacsonline.com/podcasts.

“There is certainly a lot of interest in changing current fueling models but many of these options will remain niche at best over the next two decades or more. Change is coming, but probably not as quickly as predicted by some of these new entrants,” Lenard said.

A new podcast is released every week, focusing on topics related to convenience stores. NACS Daily announced the podcasts in late January.
