DOVER - Last week Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed legislation into law that paves the way for online casino games such as blackjack and poker within the state, reports USA Today.

Along with online slot machine play and casino games, Delaware lottery tickets will also be sold through a state-run website. The newspaper notes that federal law limits online gambling to players within the state's borders, "which will be verified using geolocation software."

The state is planning to launch online gaming in 2013 and also wants users to be able to access online betting sites via smartphones and tablets.

Read more about online lottery sales in the April 2012 NACS Magazine, where NACS expresses its opposition to any attempt to allow purchases of lottery tickets online. NACS maintains that cutting into convenience store lottery sales would result in a loss of the 5% commission and other incentives that most states offer lottery sellers. Even more troubling is the potential impact on convenience store foot traffic and the collateral sales that come with lottery ticket purchases.
