NACS Joins 40-Hour Work Week Coalition

New group will urge Senate to change health-care law’s definition of “full time.”

June 19, 2014

WASHINGTON – NACS has signed on to the management committee of the 40 Hours is Full Time Initiative, a new coalition of business organizations dedicated to amending the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) definition of full-time employment to 40 hours. As background, the ACA established a full-time employee as one who works as few as 30 hours per week for purposes of the employer mandate.

NACS has been involved in other coalitions that advocate for the business community on this issue and was successful in getting legislation passed in the U.S. House of Representatives in April. Unfortunately, the Senate has been a more difficult entity to crack. By joining the management committee of this new coalition, NACS has the valuable opportunity to bring more resources to members of Congress on this important issue.

Adjusting the health-care law’s full-time definition from 30 hours to 40 hours will provide employers with significantly more flexibility in both their employees’ hours and what benefits that they are able to offer those employees. Many in the business community feel that the 30-hour cap is too restrictive and limits the offerings they are able to provide for their employees. It is important to note that a 40-hour threshold in the law wouldn’t permit any employer from offering full-time status and benefits to anyone working less than 40 hours.

Stay tuned to NACS Daily for new developments.
