NACS at 50: Exciting Times and Good Times

NACS video looks at the explosive changes that the industry and country saw in the 1960s.

June 17, 2011

ALEXANDRIA, VA - The founding of NACS in 1961 came at a time when the industry saw explosive growth, as the relatively new retail channel filled the void ignored by other existing retail channels. Stores were convenient both in location and in hours of operation.

"Exciting times, good times," noted 1971 NACS Chairman Monty Montgomery, in looking back on the industry in the 1960s.

The NACS 1995 Future Study did more than look forward to trends that would shape the industry through the end of the decade; it also took a look back to guide the future. A part of this study was a four-part video series looking at how the industry and popular culture helped shape each other.

The first short (3:23 in length) video looks at the 1960s and can be found at nacs50.com. The series will continue next Friday with a look at the courtship between fuels and convenience as the new decade dawned.
