WASHINGTON - In advance of June 22 when regulations pertaining to the Tobacco Act take effect, the FDA has established a retailer-specific fact page to help clarify the law for retailers.

In addition to requiring specific health warnings on smokeless tobacco products, the new regulations will require retailers, among other things, to:

  • Check IDs of all individuals under age 27
  • Not sell cigarettes or smokeless tobacco to anyone younger than 18
  • Sell cigarettes or smokeless tobacco only in a face-to-face exchange (except in adult-only facilities)
  • Not break cigarette packages to sell products in smaller quantities

The FDA encourages retailers to visit the page frequently and promises frequent updates.

Retailers must comply with the FDA??s new rules starting June 22 or risk stiff enforcement. Read the NACS Magazine June feature to learn more.
