WASHINGTON, D.C. - NACS has written a letter asking senators to support Senator Lisa Murkowski??s (R-AK) greenhouse gas "endangerment" resolution, S.J. Res 26. The association also joined with two dozen trade associations in a similar letter to the Senate. The resolution is expected to come for a vote tomorrow.

"Our members are very concerned that these new standards and the associated permitting process will impose an unsustainable burden on their companies and their employees," NACS wrote. "Regulating every one of the more than 165,000 retail outlets across America that sell motor fuels is a daunting task that will overwhelm state and local permitting offices, halt business growth and expansion and could force many retailers to close.

"We applaud Sen. Murkowski??s bipartisan effort and urge that you support the resolution of disapproval. Developing a [greenhouse gas] reduction program that will affect the entire United States economy is the responsibility of Congress, and this responsibility should not be ceded to the EPA. The Senate must act to preserve its authority over federal policy, to protect American businesses and state governments from overly burdensome regulations, and to provide adequate opportunity for lawmakers to craft balanced legislation that will enhance environmental protection while promoting economic development."

NACS continues to urge members to contact their Senators about this resolution.
