Orlando Stations Still Making News

Orlando Airport stations refuse to back down over posting gasoline prices.

ORLANDO - While it??s been a year since Orlando passed a law to force all gas stations near the airport to post their prices, two stations near the Orlando Airport with notoriously high gas prices have refused to post their prices, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

As of last Friday, Suncoast Energys and Sun Gas were selling gas for $5.79 per gallon, far above the $3.65 at other downtown Orlando stations.

The stations?? owners have refused to erect price signs visible to drivers, and the threat of thousands of dollars in fines and liens of foreclosure haven??t worked, according to the news source.

Orlando officials said they had received multiple complaints from tourists and business travelers who stopped at one of the stations to top off rental cars before heading home. As a result, Orlando commissioners passed an ordinance last June requiring all stations near the airport to post prices.

The city??s Code Enforcement Board began levying $250-per-day fines last month against the two stations. If the violation isn??t corrected within three months, the city has the authority to foreclose.

The owners said they are providing car renters with an alternative to the high fuel prices charged by rental car companies at the airport.

"Compared to what the rental car companies charge, we??re practically a charitable organization," said Gus Benitez, who represents the owners of Sun Gas.

The stations?? owners have sued over the law, and a trial is scheduled for the fall. The judge has ordered code inspectors to take no further action until he decides the case.
