New Taiwanese convenience store opens at the Keelung Mortuary Services Office.

KEELUNG CITY, Taiwan – A newly opened convenience store at a public funeral parlor is the first of its kind in Keelung City, offering a variety of products that aren’t typically found in Taiwan’s convenience stores.

The Taipei Times reports that the store, located at the Keelung Mortuary Services Office, is well-stocked with food, household goods and other everyday items, as well as a display stocked with a variety of paper offerings -- commonly burned during funerals --  of items that the deceased enjoyed or did not possess during life, such as paper iPhones, sports cars and heavy-duty motorcycles. The newspaper writes that cellphones are the most popular paper replicas, as many grieving families believe the departed would like to stay “plugged in” in the next world.

Located near a graveyard, the store owner told the news source that she acknowledges customers with a cordial nod, rather than a standard verbal greeting, because she does not want to disturb them during their time of grief – and she does not say “please come again.”
