But of Course There's an App for That!

Recargo helps motorists locate electric vehicle charging stations.
June 3, 2011

About a year ago, Brian Kariger, founder of Dictionary.com, launched a mobile app to help motorists locate electric vehicle charging stations. Called Recargo, the nearly one-year-old app has attracted hundreds of users and is pushing for wider adoption with a new version 1.5 release, writes the Washington Post.

New Recargo features include "Yelp-like, user contributed reviews and photos of charging stations that EV drivers encounter and use, and news content about clean transportation syndicated in-app from Recargos partner, PlugInCars.com," according to the newspaper.

Wired magazine writes that Recargo sets itself apart from other EV station location apps because it features Google Street View images of more than 1,000 EV charging sites worldwide. Users can see for themselves where the charging station is located on the sites property.

"Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by giving drivers instant access to the information they need to make range anxiety a figment of the imagination," Kariger told Wired. "Up-to-the-minute reports from the roadside are part of the answer." In addition, drivers get a news feed of the latest EV industry and policy updates.

So far, Recargo is only available in an iOS only platform for iPhone users, but an Android app is in the works.
