Google Launches Mobile Payment App

New digital wallet system Android Pay works much like Apple Pay.

June 01, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO – Last week Google announced its new Android Pay digital wallet, a “simple and secure way to pay with your Android phone.”

Much like Apple Pay works for iPhone users, Android Pay will allow people with phones running the Android operating system to upload credit, debit and pre-paid card information into a digital wallet, writes USA Today. Users then tap their phone on an Android Pay-enabled terminal at a retail store or restaurant and the payment is automatically made. “Swiping” for cards or “dipping” for chip cards is not required.

Google also noted, in announcing the new program, that “with select retailers, your loyalty programs and special offers will be automatically applied at checkout. For example, when you tap to buy a Coke at a vending machine, your MyCokeRewards will be automatically applied. With Android Pay the contactless terminal not only receives your payment info, but also your loyalty programs and offers.”

Android Pay will soon be accepted at more than 700,000 stores across the United States and in more than 1,000 Android apps. Google hopes that the new Android Pay system will make up for the 2011 Google Wallet service, which never really caught on. However, Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru isn't convinced:

"They're a solution looking for a problem,” he told USA Today. "Whenever we do surveys, consumers say theoretically they like the idea of a digital wallet, but in reality even iPhone 6 users, arguably fast adopters of technology, haven't adopted it."
