Washington Report: Vote on Swipe Fees Looming for Next Week

Week Ahead
We have been alerted that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will allow Senator John Tester€™s (D-MT) swipe fee delay amendment to come to the Senate floor the week of June 6. The Senate is currently in recess until then. Please take this time to call your senators, stop by their state offices, or e-mail them asking to vote "No" on Senator Tester€™s swipe fee delay amendment.

With the vote likely taking place in two weeks, please watch for NACS communications asking for you to take action. The convenience store industry needs to stay united as we sprint towards the finish line. Senator Durbin€™s (D-IL) amendment, which reins in the amount of control debit swipe fees, will save your stores millions of dollars.

Week in Review
On May 24, the Food and Drug Administration is extending the comment period until July 4, 2011, for a proposed rule regarding nutrition labeling of standard menu items in restaurants and similar food establishments.

On May 26, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Arizona€™s 2007 immigration law that requires all employers to use E-Verify for all new hires and permits the revocation of a company€™s business license as a penalty for employing unauthorized workers. This decision resulted from a challenge to the Legal Arizona Workers Act of 2007, not to be confused with the 2010 controversial Arizona "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act."
