D.C. Council Approves Soda Tax

Before it becomes final, the measure must go through a final city council vote, mayor approval and approval by the U.S. Congress.

WASHINGTON - The D.C. Council approved a measure this week that will subject sodas, sports drinks and other sweetened beverages, like energy drinks, to the district??s 6 percent sales tax. Such products had been exempt from the tax, writes NBCWashington.com.

Beverages like water, coffee, tea, milk and juice will not be subject to the 6 percent sales tax.

The tax increase was "vehemently opposed" by retailers, liquor stores and delis across the city ?" "Even the nationally famous Ben??s Chili Bowl opposes the soda tax," notes the Washington Times.

Council members approved the measure as part of the district??s 2011 budget plan. The entire package will be voted on in June and require Mayor Fenty??s signature as well as approval by the U.S. Congress before it can be enacted.
