SAN FRANCISCO €" Mobile payments company Square "has been on a roll as of late," writes Geek.com and is becoming a popular, non-traditional method to receive payments via a smartphone or tablet.

The model expands the footprint of credit card transactions and has received the formal support of Apple, which recently began selling the reader at its retail stores.

The company is expanding and recently announced the launch of new applications that Geek.com said "promise to make cash registers all but obsolete."

The first application, Square Register, integrates with the iPad and replaces cash registers with a touch-enabled POS solution that includes the ability to send receipts digitally.

The second application, Card Case, allows customers to open "tabs" with businesses, a one-click purchasing option that eliminates the need for customers to carry credit cards to make purchases.
