SAN FRANCISCO - Walgreens has been testing a healthier-for-you foodservice program, similar to the company€™s "food desert" pilot in Chicago, across 30 San Francisco stores, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The program focuses on "consumers looking for more healthy food alternatives," said Robert Elfinger, a spokesperson for the drugstore chain.

Food offerings include fresh produce, salads, sandwiches, ready-to-heat meat loaf and many other to-go meal options.

An Outer Richmond store began stocking fresh food last week and is one of 30 in the area where the program will roll out throughout the summer.

"As we learn from this initial test, we believe there's potential to expand this offering to more stores in the Bay Area," Elfinger said. "We hope to give consumers more options and more reasons to visit our stores."
