DUBLIN, Ohio – A petition on Change.org begging Wendy’s to offer a veggie burger was actually weeks late, writes the Columbus Dispatch. Turns out, the fast-food chain has been testing a black bean veggie burger in Ohio.

“We’ve been conducting a small operations test for a high-quality, great-tasting black-bean burger at two restaurant locations in Columbus,” Wendy’s spokesman Bob Bertini told the news source.

The black bean burger comes on a multigrain bun with pepper jack cheese, asiago ranch sauce, tomato, red onion and spring-mix greens.

“It makes sense because Wendy’s is moving upscale,” Darren Tristano, vice president at Technomic, commented to the news source. “It’s a good thing to give it a try and see if they can score with vegetarians.”

Wendy’s isn’t alone in bringing a vegetarian option to its mostly-meat menu. White Castle tested a veggie burger last year that it purchased from Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods. The veggie option has been a permanent menu option since March.

“Talking to vegetarians around White Castle, a few people told me they hadn’t been there in years,” Tristano told the news source, adding, “and they went back because they added it.”

Wendy’s, meanwhile is optimistic. “It’s too early to say where this may go,” Bertini said, “but we’ve been encouraged by the early consumer response.”
