McDonald’s Testing Delivery as Part of Restructuring

OAK BROOK, Ill. – As has been widely reported, McDonald's President and CEO Steve Easterbrook recently announced a series of changes for the beleaguered company, the first steps in a massive turnaround. While some aspects of the plan, such as efforts to increase the number of franchisees, have garnered much media attention, one proposal was a bit quieter: delivery.

Following in the footsteps of Chipotle, which announced last month that it would be offering delivery via the popular Postmates app, McDonald’s is also jumping on the delivery bandwagon. As part of Easterbrook’s larger announcement, the company also previewed its new customer-centric test. Beginning immediately, Postmates customers in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn can order delivery from the full menu (minus ice cream) at any of the nearly 90 McDonald’s restaurants in those boroughs. No further details were given on how long the test would run or when the delivery option might roll out on a larger scale. (Chipotle offers delivery in any of the nearly 70 cities served by Postmates.)

Other features of the turnaround plan include the expected sale of about 3,500 of McDonald’s 36,000 company-owned locations worldwide to franchisees by the end of 2018, which will raise the percentage of total franchisee-owned restaurants to 90%, from the current 81%.
