MERRIMACK, Fla. – An employee at a Gulf Gas Station uncovered a skimmer installed at a gas pump while in-store customers tried to distract him, WMUR-TV reports. The credit card skimmer was discovered quickly by the clerk after the in-store incident.

“We have two inside the store that we believe are connected,” Merrimack Detective Scott Park said. “There's an obvious distraction technique that's used.”

Police said that the Sunday night incident involved a man and woman, who extended what should have been a short transaction with conversation and other stalling tactics. “It was taking too long for a small transaction,” said Tony Nasr, who owns the gas station. “They took some beer and candy and chips. I think after two to three minutes, the girl came in, and she bought some cigarettes. They tried to talk to the clerk.”

While the pair were inside the store, a Ford Expedition had pulled up to the gas pumps in a way that obscured visuals from the outside security cameras. A clerk found the skimming devices quickly.

“We haven't had any victims come forward yet,” Park said. “However, we were able to collect the devices, which in the event it’s not a Bluetooth device, we should probably be able to be safe by saying we don't think anyone's information has been compromised at this time.” No customer has indicated financial data had been stolen.

Florida legislators are considering a bill that would make it a felony to possess or sell a skimming device. Skimming continues to plague U.S. gasoline stations, but there are other precautions retailers can take to prevent fraud. During the NACS Show, a Technology Edge panel discussed ways to combat skimming, while “Secure Your Pump” from NACS Magazine provides resources and suggestions for keeping customer card data safe.
