Enoc Opens First Solar-Powered Gas Station

Site will produce 120 kilowatts per hour at peak capacity.

DUBAI – Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc) Group has opened its first solar-powered service station in Dubai. The service station lies on the city's main Sheikh Zayed Road thoroughfare and is covered with solar panels that can generate up to 120 kilowatt hours, about 30% more energy than the station needs, which means the excess power is directed back into the city's electric grid, reports Gulf Today.

“We have laid out a detailed plan to deliver 14 service stations by [the end of] 2017. With two service station openings already announced earlier this year, the launch of the UAE’s first solar powered service station demonstrates our efforts to become an environmentally responsible energy player,” Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Enoc Group CEO, said in a statement.

Enoc, a government-owned oil retailer, says the capacity is about 30% more energy than the site needs, so the excess power is directed back into the city’s power grid. The site utilizes a vapor recovery system at the pump, and utilizes solar power for lighting, water recycling and other energy-efficient business practices, according to a news release.
